“More than anything else the sensation is one of perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost, if you can conceive of such a combination.” – Wilbur Wright

It’s noon and I’m about to fly – to do simulated power failures.  Yikes!

I’ve done my homework.  Roger provided me with the A,B,C’s of what I need to know (no joking, he did provide me with the following A,B,C’s – what a cool way to remember) and went through them thoroughly:

Airspeed:  fly the airplane, pitch for glide GOKIAS 103 likes, 65 knots

Best place to land:  fly to the field; keep your place to land in sight

Checklist:  from left to right quickly, thoroughly.

Declare:  Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.  Know the setting: 121.5, know the squawk setting

Exit: seat belts tight, door ajar, fuel valve off (mixture to idle cutoff; key off, mags off)

Pull yoke all the way off/back.

Checklist items:

  1.  Fuel valve (toward me) air, ignition
  2.  Mixture rich (unless it’s hot, then you’ll have to lean it some)
  3.  Throttle
  4.  Carburetor heat (pull out).  Fresh air for engine.  alternate source of air.  Get on this quickly.
  5.  Oil Pressure, oil temperature
  6.  Fuel gauges. Check for
    1. fuel starvation:  fuel not getting to the engine
    2. fuel exhaustion:  yep, you just ran out of fuel
  7.  Magnetos:  go both, left, right.  See what works best
  8.  Primer:  should be locked.

Forever and a day…
